Tale of the twin leaders

Two leaders made into the headlines of the media this week. One of them attracted the world's attention and the other one attracted the indian media.

The first man is Yasir Arafat. The way i see his life,he was the chief and godfather of the Palestinians(is that how they are called?)for more than 30 years. He held a strange record of surviving most number of murder attempts. For any leader in such position, natural death is really an achievement and a rarest one.

Whatever his stands on the Middle east issue, there is no doubt that he was a great leader and was the man to look upon whenever Palestinian people had any issue.I doubt whether there is any fitting and natural heir for him in PA.

Talking about leaders,Arafat was also a great orator and used to deliver several spell bound speaches. One of his notorious speaches was his addressing of UN,roaring 'I have come here with gun in one hand as a fighter and an Olive branch in the other as a peace negotiator. Please do not make me drop the Olive branch'.
I see oratorial power as a common factor among all the famous( and infamous too) leaders. One interesting exemption in that list is Mahatma Gandhi,i think.Though his writings were great,i do not see anybody remembering him for his oratorial skills. It takes amazing will power and inborn leadership qualities to be a leader.I am sure Arafat had it through out his life.

The Israel and Palestinian dispute is easily looked over as 'Middle east dispute' these days.Hope the peace is restored in that region soon enough.Because, the people in that region have paid a lot for that.

Now,the second one is Shankara Mutt's spiritual leader, HH Jayandhra Saraswathi. He has been detained by TamilNadu police in connection with a murder. It is very clear to even a common man, that he will be out of this case with elan.Such is his influence in the Indian politics.

I do not hold anything against him. But,a spiritual leader landing up in jail is not a welcoming event. This may raise serious doubts in the minds of the 'not so serious followers' of him. That is because,he already raised many eyebrows some 10 years back,by walking out of the mutt abruptly.

As a well wisher,i would love to see him out of this case and stay away from the politics and involve more in the spiritual activities.

From Here to Where?

Elton John is marrying his long time 'BoyFriend'.(For those who do not know Elton john,he is a very famous singer who has withstood the test of time.).After reading this news,I feel like singing the song "Enge sellum indha paadhai?" ..Duh.

How much ever justifications are done on this issue,i will never be able to understand this breaking of the very basic law of the nature.

This is just the starting.I think the stage is all set for many more mockeries to come. Now that the gay marriages have become legal in few states and more states are thinking about making it legal.

Behold!Thou shalt witness this in umpteen!

How to name it?

This is a thing that most of the Indian guys who travel abroad would have faced. The question about the fair and equal treatment of desis abroad.Though there are many cases of bad treatment that desis face, there are also some cases where the desi guys are over cautious about this issue and misunderstand an unintentional act as a purposeful act.
I came across one such incident when i traveled from Tokyo to Chennai sometime back.I happened to meet a young Indian IT guy who was also flying with me from Tokyo to Malaysia. We soon became acquainted and sharing some lighter moments. After a good meal ,he asked for a glass of Orange juice. The stewardess brought the juice and kept it on the front tray of his seat.Generally,it is a good gesture to give it in the hands. But,as she was in the middle of serving lunch for other passengers, she was visibly in a hurry. So,her act was very understandable by anybody. But,my friend was very upset and very angry with this act.He was fuming and telling me that she did that very intentionally and she was a racist.Oops!i started realizing how funny it may turn up if he raises up such an allegation in front of all.

He already pressed the button on top to call the crew members to report this.He was telling me that he was going to demand an apology from her.I tried explaining him about the hurry she was in and showed him the lunch issuing difficulties, with such a narrow aisle and dragging the cart all along.Though he was not a first timer to the flight journey, anger shadowed reasoning.I told him not to blow up this thing unnecessarily and told him that i did not feel she did that on any mean intentions.Luckily,he calmed down, though not fully satisfied.I had to distract him by showing some movies in my laptop and make him listen some songs.

I think, the main reason behind such an over cautious act is that India is in the transition stage now.I had seen videos of India-pre independence in Discovery channel. While the so called Maharajas were moving around with the East Indian Company's bigwigs happily, the poorer people were acting more like jokers in front of the Brits.Even long after the independence, the mentality did not change much. Now,IT has opened up the windows to the world,Indians are getting opportunities to explore the world and adapting themselves. So,this overconscious act is a part of this evolution and let us hope it disappears soon.

But,the sad part is,many Asian countries still have that colonial attitude in their blood. They still do not believe in themselves all are equal.I can mention some incidents for this too.One is,when i was flying to Thailand from Tokyo for a holiday.Just before landing, all the passengers were given a small basket of flowers and fruits as a welcoming gesture from the Thai Air.I was sitting between my two Japanese colleagues. When everyone was receiving, naturally i also put out my hand to receive it.That stewardess ignored me and gave one to my colleague next to me.Ok..even if she was not intentional, she should have been decent enough to welcome me when i put out my hand.how do i name this cheapest act?She did not realize that she had let down the whole country with this.No wonder Thai tops the world in prostitution and AIDS.

Another example is,when Beckham visited Japan, some Japanese TV channel invited him for a programme. You should have seen the way the hosts behaved in front of him. They were crwaling on the floor and scratching like monkeys and doing all sorts of animated things in front of him to impress(!) him.It was merely annoying and pathetic to see them.

All said ,I know i do not have too much of exposure to assert my points.i should say these are all just my views on this.I am glad to be corrected.

Veerappan-End of days

At last, the mission is accomplished. The infamous, menacing sandalwood smuggler Veerappan was shot dead in a police encounter yesterday.A man is said to have lead a useful life only if there are atleast 10 people that shed tears when he dies.I am sure there will not be anybody who would have shed tears for this beast's death. But,somebody may argue that he has helped the villagers and tribes that lived in the forest.I will not term it as a help if it is done at the cost of so many lives.

This encounter should have been done years ago.Even if he was not shot dead now,he would have died in another 2 or 3 years of old age. But,if he dies like that, then the Justice of the Almighty would not have been served on him. This is the most suited death for such outlaws. So,better late than never.

Thanks to the opportunistic media,he was wrongly projected as a hero amongst the public, showing him doing prayers. But,people were smart enough to ignore that kind of cheap business.Heights of this hypocrisy was, showing a video of his narration of a Police Officer's brutal murder. In such cases, one cannot help but to agree with our President that Indian media should have a code of conduct.

The effect of media is very strong and they should realize it.It can mislead the common man to any extent. That was very apparent when the actor Rajkumar was kidnapped by Veerappan.I was one among the thousands of Tamilians whose lives were at stake till Rajkumar was released.

I can only hope that the media again does not show its ugly business face and start doing all sorts of nonsense coverage about his lifestyles and other stuffs.
People say "no news is good news".But,it is "Bad news is good news " for the media.

I still wonder why it took so long for our Special police force to nab him down. Was it a fact that he was the master of the forests and our force did not have knowledge about the forests? or this delay was a deliberate act of our politicians?

But,one thing is very sure. With his death, lot of secrets about his underground links with our dirty politicians will also be buried.

On a lighter note,it was 'very sad' to see his face with a trimmed mustache.

In the eye of the storm

Last week was a very eventful week in Tokyo.Nature was at her full strength throughout the week.It was pouring continuously all the week without a break.I was praying to God that at least a part of this rain be shifted to TamilNadu.
One strange thing about the rains in Tokyo is that it pours promptly on all the weekends spoiling the plans.Even the nature helps Japanese economy.
Coming back to the events of the week,it was Wednesday night around 11.I shut down my system after browsing and getting ready to sign off for the day.Suddenly,i started feeling the tremors.Talking about tremors,it's become a norm in Tokyo stay.In fact ,i enjoy mild tremors. It is because ,we are sure that it is not going to cause any damages or casualities,as the buildings are designed keeping this earthquake in mind. But,however safe the buildings are, when the shake is prolonging ,then it is always a thing to reckon with.So was this tremor i experienced. It started off mildly first.I thought it's going to stop in a second or 2 as usual. But,as the seconds hand ticked ,the shake became quite strong. The window glasses were ramming so hard and there was even a mild rumbling noise too.I decided its time to run for shelter. My residence is in the second floor. So,i ran down the stairs and stood in the middle of the street.I could then see the buildings and the lamp posts swinging vigorously. As usual, there was not a single japanese soul came out of the house because of this tremor. It is very difficult for a non-Japanese to be so used to these earthquakes.
My next encounter with the forces of nature was an unnecessary one.It was a three day weekend for me and because of the bad weather, our weekend plans and office party were cancelled. It was too boring to be at home. So,i thought i would goto the office and do something useful.Though i knew the weather would be bad,i did not realize the seriousness. When i went to the office, there were just some drizzles and there were hardly anybody in the office.I spent sometime in the office and after 2 hours i decided to return home.
So,when i opened the door, then i realized i was exactly in the eye of the storm.Taifu(Typhoon) number 22 was hitting Tokyo with such a force that it was the strongest storm so far in the decade. There was not a single living soul on the road.I gathered my courage and decided to walk home.I would not have even gone 100 meters,my umbrella was upside down,i was being pushed away by the wind and in addition to this,it was raining so hard like there was no tomorrow.
Just in front of my eyes ,i saw a pizza delivery guy getting knocked down from his bike by a speeding truck. That got my nerves and i ran back to my office to wait till the storm crossed Tokyo. But,my luck was running out.The finger print scanning machine on the front door of my office was not working. The wind was so strong that whereever i stood,i got drenched.
Finally, the scanner scanned my finger prints with a mild electric shock.I was almost hopeless that my night was going to be in the office itself, without food.Probably God would have heard my grudges. One of my colleagues came to the office in his car.I was a bit relieved that i had got a company at least to talk with. But,that guy was kind enough to drop me home in his car amidst the storm. While driving also,it was so hard for him.
Now it is so calm here. This silence is indeed scary.

Return of the King(s)

It's not always that i am happy to be proved wrong. But this time i am glad to be proved so.I was thinking that ICC champions' trophy would be won by the Australia because this has become more like a norm these days.
For cricket fans,Sunday's final between the age old rivals,West Indies and England, was a refreshing change.Like many of the cricket fans,i am also a die-hard fan of West indian cricket team.I have also felt sorry for the Windies when they were losing the once kingly status to be deformed to a sub-ordinary team. There were many factors like the inadequacy of funding and youngsters moving to more prosperous games like basket-ball.One reason i like the Windies is,their passion for the game and their sportive on-field attitude. It was good to see them coming back to a decent form.
Highlight of the match was, the fielding by both the teams.Neither team is famous for their fielding. In spite of that dubious distinction,i think they did pretty well.I would rate the second slip catch by Strauss off Sarwan's bat as one of the best catches in that region.Other catches by Lara and Solanki were also of top class.
As Steve Waugh once told Gibbs,England just dropped their cup out of their hands.Though the full credit goes to the 9th wicket partnership by the Windies,England could have always won it easily, hadn't they worn that lethargic attitude.
There were some lessons in the match for players like Virender Sehwag and Ricardo Powell that inconsistent aggression is not going to do any good for anybody.
To sum up,it was a final worth every penny paid.(Don't ask me what did i pay.Because i also paid over the net to watch the series).I'd love to see more Non-Australia finals in the future.

Bowling for Columbine

I could not have written this today had NewZealand given some decent fight in their match against Australia in the ICC trophy. There was no meaning watching that match after the NZ batting line up crumbled like a pack of cards.Pathetic show.Australians are playing in totally another level than the rest.I do not know why,but i hate to see them win.It may be because of their on-field behaviour,or it may be because of our inability to beat them.
So,i went down and switched on the TV to just scroll through the channels.I am such a bad watcher of TV that nobody would prefer to sit with me if the remote is in my hands. In some channel, there was this documentary called Bowling for Columbine directed by Michael Moore.
It was directed on the backdrop of a shooting incident in Columbine school and the gun culture in US as the root cause. When we say documentary,we usually expect a boring video for an hour or 2.But,this one was really interesting and Moore manages to mix humour even with the real life incidents and conversations.
The facts shown and discussed in the movie/documentary are so chilling.Every guy who owns a gun tries to justify his action. He says there are wackos around so he carries a gun.A wacko is afraid of other wackos. No wonder there are 11,500 casualities off the gun every year only in US ,where as in most of the countries it is merely a 2 digit number.Moore practically demonstrates how easy to buy a gun in US by doing a gun purchase for himelf.

He also discusses some sensitive issues about the race discrimination in US.I do not know how far it is true because i have never actually lived in US.May be my friends and brothers will be able to tell me more about it.There was a 5 minutes animated clip about this issue that was so funny yet so true.
Till yesterday ,i was under the impression that Japan is the most peaceful country in the world. But when i saw his documentary parts in Canada, i was proved i am still a frog in a well.It is such a peaceful country and believe me,nobody locks the front door of the house. This is not possible even in the most peaceful villages of India. So its not a surprise that only the news about the new bumps on the road becomes the breaking news on their channels.
After seeing this one,i am really looking forward to see Moore's latest one 'Farenheit 9/11'.It should be much more interesting,i guess.

My Ordeal in HongKong

This is a different kind of traveller's diary. I can say it is a traveller's whining.I wanted to write it down in the blog so that i can read it again after few years and laugh at it.My trip to HK does not deserve a quote like ' if there is a heaven on earth,(it is here)*3'.I did not feel any great difference between Hong Kong and any of the busiest cities like Tokyo or Bombay. One major difference is that, the whole city stank like a kitchen and of course it smelt like chicken too.
I was very anxious that the guide of our tourist company will surely speak english. But the last ray of hope also vanished when he told me ' i do not speak english' in perfect english. We had to settle down with Japanese even in HK.Those four days in HK were and will be one of the busiest days of my life. The minute we landed in HK airport, our schedule of sight seeing started. Our day starts at 6 am with break fast ,6.15 boarding the bus and thats it.He takes us to all stupid places which even dog wont bother to mark its territory there. That bloody guide gave us wake up call at 5 am in the morning. The problem with the Japanese guys is that they never question the rules. We Indians were jumping against that guide that we wouldnt wake up at 5 am.So ,naturally it was in vain. For heaven sake, show me one unfortunate man who has to wake up at 5 am to spend his holidays. And our day ended at 11.30 pm .I slept like a wooden log in the hotel room.
There were as little as 5,6 people inside our mini bus. That guide was pumping information about that small and young city with the public addressing system inside the bus.My colleagues had a tough time preventing me from jumping out of the bus.I was cursing my friends who chose HK as their stupid holiday location. My first choice would have been Thailand.Wow! what a perfect place for holidaying.
Our guide probably would have worked in some court previously i guess. He was repeating his every sentence 3 times and in addition to that ,he was asking us to remember it surely.Who cares to remember any info abt HK anyway as our trip was just for 4 days. There is a joke in Japan about the Chinese guys that only 4 legged stuff chinese dont eat is the furniture.See who is making fun of whom. But that joke was such a truth when we sat for lunch. When i said we need vegetarians, those waiters were so amazed and confused and even scared. They finally brought raw green leaves for us to eat after a lot of intellectual discussions.i was lighter by 2 kgs in just 4 days.
We were finally released from being the hostage of that vicious guide after 2 days. Our actual fun started right from that time only.I was thinking that it would be all fun from that time on.But my destiny was laughing at me in the form of immigration department. HK is so small that every 30 kms you have this Chinese border and so an immigration office.2 pages of my passport were filled with stamping in just 4 days.
Once we were back from the chinese city ShinZhen, i was in the queue for stamping into HK.But the stamping officer had an identity crisis with my photograph in thePP and my present face.I was up against a face off.I was called in by the immigration office and one old lady was waiting to give me tough time. She was asking me who is this in this PassPort.I said that was me.She was least convinced with that reply. It had a photo that i took nearly 7 years ago.She was asking me to show me some other proof of myself.I took out my foreigner registeration card of Japanese government. To add fuel to this confusion, that photograph was showing me as a fat guy with big moustache and dark(as if now i have a complexion of BradPitt!!).Now she was almost sure that i was a terrorist who was going to spoil the already nasty city of HK.Then i started to explain her that all those snaps were mine only. The passport snap was my college days snap when i had hair style like 1970's tamil movie hero.I told her now i had a very short hair with most of them gone with the wind and i removed my moustache. The japanese card snap was taken when i ate tens of thousands of calories every day in bangalore and was close to 80 kilos.Even then she was not satisfied .I was wondering whether this lady would bring some eyelining pencil and draw a moustache on my face and check.
Then the real test started. She was asking me every detail of the stampings in my passport right from the very first stamping.Luckily i remembered every date and detail of the stamping. When i told her not to worry because i would be leaving to Japan the next day,she was even asking me to show my return tickets.I told her i am not a mad guy to carry my flight ticket whereever i go and told her to come to my hotel to check my tickets.By that time i was starting to lose my patience. If i had told some wrong details with the pssport,i would be going to land up in HK prison eating garden leaves all my life and would never be able to see my beloved ones ever again.haha.
Finally after almost an hour of checking and rechecking, they let me go out.By that time,my colleagues had started one major search and rescue operation in that huge premises.
Amidst all these confusions and menace of the guide,I had fun witnessing some of the most beautiful cultural shows of China and got some fortunes in the gambling.I should say China is atleast 10 years ahead of India in infrastructure.

The Haunting

Sun rises in the east.Sets in the west.Sounds very common and often heard? Here is one more routine that joins the list.Indian cricket team loses the final of a tournament.Sad,but true. The same statement if told to me few years back,i would have been the first person to jump in anger.I forgot how many finals India have been losing continuously.I think it is roughly around 11. The so called 'finals' ghost has haunted the Indian team yet again without fail.
Here i do not want to bash the indian cricket team just because it lost.Because one day matches are becoming highly unpredictable these days. That is one way a good sign for all.But right from the beginning of the tournament, indians never played like a team that wants to win the Asia cup. They seemed they would be contended with a berth in the final. As the pundits say, indians were not in the groove after a long break. But,is that not the same duration Pakistan also had?I felt they did better than Indians in this tournament.Nobody expected India to win in this final. As i was talking to my friend about the outcome of the match,he said "my heart says India but brain says Srilanka".

Our indian team has this unique distinction. They treat every team the same.In the sense, they fight hard to win even with non test playing teams also.It struggles equally with Australia as well as Saudi Arabia.

This one is probably the most discussed stuff in the media.'Sachin's game is not the same anymore. He plays by the percentage'.For all of them, let me ask something. Is it a eleven member team or one man team?We have a striker in Sehwag, who very rarely crosses 50.With such a highly inconsistent player as an opening partner, how can one expect Sachin also to swing the bat?If Sachin hits and india wins, then we call it 'Team effort' .At the same time,if india wins and sachin fails, people say Sachin ditched us as usual in the final and luckily so and so saved the team. The following one is real strange.Sachin hits 80 odd runs and the rest of the team together scores 100,and of course india loses. Now Sachin is blamed for not being the match winner. What is it with you people? Is this the price for being so consistent? What exactly the media want him to do?Hit the whole target for himself?who knows, that time too he will be blamed for playing for individual records.
When Sourav talks to the media,he always makes it a point to say that the team does not depend on Sachin alone.Yes.it is true. The team does not depend on Sachin while getting the payment. But when it comes to the outcome of the match,it is still in Sachin's hand as always. How many times does Sourav play the role of a match winner?
First of all,India should concentrate on the fitness level of the players, especially Zaheer khan,Nehra,Laxman Etc.I was wondering why Kaif is there in the team at all.Is it for that once in-blue-moon-75 he hits?
Another one is,when we want to become a champion,we should think like a champion. There is one famous saying that says,'the best form of offense is defense'.I beg to differ this one in the case of one day matches.I have never seen the Indian team attacking right from the start.
As an ardent fan of cricket, espcially Indian cricket,i would really love to see indian team get out of the rust and be back in their form which they had, not so long ago.I still believe India has in it to become a champion.I hope the indian team also believe the same.
All the best India!!

A template

Let me not start with the usual stuffs like "here we go guys or hey folks bla bla....".I am going to play another innings in my familiar territory.Hold on ,no prizes for guessing. Its about movies.Yesterday, when i was watching a hindi movie 'Hum Tum' ,i could not avoid thinking about 'When Harry met Sally'.But,HumTum has better comedy sequences and the movie totally rests on Saif's shoulder in the first half. His natural sense of wits and his impeccable  comic timing carries the movie smoothly till the first half.Second half was a typical Hindi movie.

I am seriously thinking of changing the name Bollywood to Punjabwood. The heroes are always Rahul khannas or Karan kapoors or Raj Malhotras. The heroines are usually Poojas or rheas. The very moment hero has a glimpse on the heroine, he starts singing "khudiye, tusi kitni soni laghthi ve' and the heroine responds by singing ' mundeyaa, lejaa mora nindhiyaa'.If we are not having lead roles as punjabis, then at least there should be one Anupam Kher as sardarji and Archana puran singh as his sweetheart for comedy.

But,when it comes to showing Marathis, the character is described as a roughian blabbering 'Bole to ek dham sahi' kind of dialogs. If it is Gujarathis, they are shown as some crazy cave men and the tamilian's characterization, its much more lousy. They always say "ayyayo' and keep eating idly, sambar, idly sambar. Why northies.why do you happily accept it??

Move away, widowed, white sareed movie mammas!here comes the bubbly, witty dadi maas.Every hindi movie should have a dadi ma who is as smart as a Mensa. She calls everybody as 'oye!puthar, yahaan aa jaa puthar' and usually be the first one to sniff the love affairs and stands against those who oppose the young lovers. She can be preferably Farida jalal. The rule says that she should call out for 'wahe guru' whenever possible.

The lead family never goes out without their Armani suit on and their mode of transportation is preferably choppers which drops them at their very own backyard.Or at least there is one Hrithik roshan driving Ferrari to the college.

Our bollywood heroes do major favour for the multinational fashion outfits. They always make sure they show the Polo T-shirts(with the Polo name printed on it) and Italian designer shoes with Police sun glasses covering their eyes. And the heroines talk abuot her wardrobe with all the latest brands while talking casually and she carries the GUCCI vanities.

If i say lead family,i am talking about atleast 6 different families living together and doing business together. There is always one lousy uncle or aunt who cracks jokes all the time and does some major sacrifice in the end for the hero's family.

We have this certain advantage when we go for a Hindi movie. You get to see the whole Europe or US in the best of their seasons in just 100 rupees. You do not need to go for a package tour. The heroine walks over the plush green meadows in NewZealand and zooooooom, our hero stands on top of Alps singing and explaining us how he became deewaana.Or the hero runs in the streets of Manhattan searching for his soul mate while the girl stays in Paris.

Just mix Shah Rukh Khan as hero,Aishwarya Rai as heroine and Amitabh bachan as Dad and stir it properly. You have a hit movie ready to be served.

Ooops..is there something missing in the main ingredients?yeah.'The Story'..Oh! Come on man! You cannot be so much demanding. How much do you expect for the 50 bucks you pay??

Thought for the day

Do you know the names of few Latin American writers?Do you know or at least heard about the South American rebel cum writer Che Guevara or his kinds?Do you often use words like 'post modernism','Neo-modernism','magical realism','sur-realism' (not necessarily knowing their meanings)?Have you written any piece of work which challenges the understanding power of a common reader?

If your response to any one of the above questions is YES,then you can boast yourself as a writer,or may be a great writer in the present world of Tamil literature. Before starting to talk about this,i have to admit that my knowledge in the literature is almost null.I just have the habit of browsing through the various sites and some of them happens to have the works of some good writers in Tamil.

What i feel is,these so called new crop of writers mostly fall into fewer sub categories. One set of writers who just bash anybody and everybody's literary work. They do not even bother to sit and read and find out the positives and negatives of others work. The other category simply are the ones which i have mentioned in the beginning.

I know one tamil writer who claims that he is the only person who has written a Tamil novel with international standards. That embraces the style of post modernism.I happened to read his (only)novel which he was boasting about. That novel was more like a crazily edited movie which did not have a proper start or end.It neither had a continuity. That novel served as  a dictionary of nasty slangs of human anatomy. Then only i understood, post modernism is post mortem of the ethics of the literature. I do not understand why they alienate themselves and go further away from the enthusiastic reader. That novelist had an answer for this question too.He says ," i am beyond this earthly desires. You people are mean middle class creatures. So do not read my work".The so called beyond earthly desire people once had an intellectual meeting in a local wine shop(!!!) and some of those geniuses smashed down our novelist's face into a bloody mess.Haha..

I am reluctantly using the cliche here ,writing is an art.As a common reader,When i read some book,i should not put an extra effort to understand what has been written.I am sure many people will feel it that way.

Here i would like to mention about the Tamil short  stories collection of Sujatha's 'SriRangathu devadhaigal'.There are many reasons why it is close to my heart. One is the slang used by the characters in the stories is the same as that of mine.Secondly, the author writes the incidents of his younger days. The author gives a right blend of his imagination with the real incidents. The mixing is so perfect like the colors of the rainbow that one cannot find out where the imaginary part starts.Gradually,it makes me feel that i am narrating the story instead of the author. That is where the author succeeds.

I used to admire this author for his width of knowledge.Apart from his literary work,he has inspired many a young writers by guiding them all.He has played a significant role in introducing the usage of computers to the age old Tamil literature. Now,that i call as a service to the literary world.

If i am labeled as mean middle class for reading such books, then i am happy to be one.

Black Friday

It was a heart breaking accident which left the parents of school going kids speechless in sorrow and fear.90 kids were burnt alive when a major fire broke out in a primary school at Kumbakonam,Tamil nadu. When i saw the news in the internet first,i was not aware of the degree of devestation. But after a while, when i saw the details that 90 primary school students were burnt alive,my heart froze. This is the kind of loss that nothing can compensate it and console the grief of the parents. We do not know how many future entrepreneurs we lost in that accident.

There are certain other things i noticed during the proceedings after the accident. The first and most important is the manner in which the media handled the coverage of the news.In my humble opinion, the media should have restricted the coverage by not showing the severely charred bodies of the kids.It does not add up any value to the news.instead, such photo news simply increases the grievances and increases the panic among the other parents. Those photos were in such a way that if a weak hearted person takes a look at those snaps,he or she is sure to have at least a mild attack.Media is such a senstive medium that they should realize it and have some ethics in their job.

Next thing is the TamilNadu government's relief measures. It was good to see the CM cancelling the licence of all the schools with thatched roofs and those that do not meet the minimum safety requirements. We hope the government  take the future of the students in those schools also into consideration. This accident is an alarm for the government and the educational authorities that they cannot afford to be careless in the precautionary meassures anymore.

The District educational Officer and some more  have been suspended. All i know is the District Educational officer visits the schools every year and ask the students some questions and makes sure the academics are conducted properly.I do not think he has any power to decide the licence issues of the schools.I feel the government blindly points the fingers at everybody in the hierarchy. This is not time for the blame game. They should concentrate more in the precautionary actions to avoid further incidents like this.

It was sad to see the teachers of the concerned school are chased by the police like criminals.Though the allegation that they fled the spot during the accident is justified to certain extent, this is no way to treat the noble professionals. What they did during the accident was just human. They do not deserve punishments like sentencing them for 7 years imprisonment and all.People who are to be arrested here are the corrupt educational authorities, who gave permission for such an unsafe premises. Here politicians do that usual foul play and make the common teachers as soft targets.
May the little innocent souls rest in peace and may God give mental strength to the parents to overcome this terrible incident.

Spider Man-2

A party on friday evening in an Italian Restaurant with all your buddies,in the party you get the surprise news of your bank balance growing thicker by a good amount and a saturday evening Spider man movie. How better can a weekend be than the above?Yes,these all happened to me last weekend.

So,when a good news comes,a treat follows.Yes,i am no exception to this unwritten rule.Saturday's spending was all mine.No cribbing about that. After all,we earn to have fun.As per the plan,We went to Spiderman part 2.

We have been watching the trailers of this much awaited movie for quite sometime.Though the clippings shown were good, there was always a doubt that the spirit of the first part might not be carried to the next part. But not only did the second part carry that spirit, but it was far beyond my expectations too.The movie spun a sheer magical web in the hall for two hours.

The main reason for the success of this spider man series is that,it is not just a story of a super hero's stunts to save the man kind.It is a story of a boy who accidentally happens to be a super hero.It narrates beautifully, the sacrifices he makes in his personal life and the emotional trauma he undergoes because of that.Toby Maguire and Kirsten Dunst have lived as spider man and Mary Jane. The emotional scenes that involves spiderman, his childhood sweetheart Mary Jane and his aunt May were too good.

The technical team is solely responsible for the success of the movie.I just could not take the magnificence of the cinematography when the spidey flies in the NY streets. My god! it was just eye popping to say in the least exclamation.I felt like i was also flying with him and even had the same feeling of sitting in the roller-coaster ride.

"Being intelligent is not a privilage. Its a God's gift to serve the mankind",
"With great power comes great responsibilities".These were the punchy one liners i liked very much in the movie.

Of course,if you let me,i will be writing all day about this movie.I had a great time watching this movie. So,please watch this movie and enjoy without fail. But,please dont ever watch this one in VCD or DVD at home. That will be a big mistake to do.

Have fun folks!!
Adios

Nostalgia!

MasilaaMani temple.Posted by Hello

"Why would you ever want to leave such a beautiful place buddy?",asked one of my colleague.I can list down more than a handful of reasons for our family to be shifted to chennai from my native place. No basic infrastructures. There are no doctors there anymore and we never had a hospital.Inspite of all these,i cannot help that lump in the throat when i see these snaps of my native. It has been almost 8 years since i stayed more than a month continuously in my native. So,though its not going to be too hard for me,I wonder how emotional my parents will be right now.

My native place is called Porayar, located on the east coast,100 Km from Pondicherry towards the famous shrines,Velankanni and Nagore Darha.Needless to say,my native was one of the most picturesque places i have been to.It has appeared in few movies too.The temple in the above snap will be there in that place mostly for another 10 years.I took a snap of the last tomb standing. The sea erosion has been the Tomb raider here.It is very sad to see such an amazing architectural work going down in front of your eyes. But,i feel nothing much can be done to prevent that.My granny used to say that she used bull carts to goto the sea shore from this temple when she was young.Though it sounded like an exaggeration,i could believe it to some extent because of the major cyclone that hit our native some 50 years ago.

An Evening View of the beach in my native  Posted by Hello

There is one beautiful Danish fort just in the sea shore.I would have loved to post a snap of that, had the government authorities not spoiled it so miserably making it appear worse than an ordinary godown,in the name of 'Renovation'.

My mornings in my native were the best way to start a day.I used to have the habit of waking up early in the morning in my school days.I could hear the birds's wake up calls and cuckoos humming up and flying.Open the door and a heavenly frame unfolds in front of your eyes. You see farmers starting their day with the ploughs, the best and my favourite one was,the calves running around. One needs a thousand eyes to see the jubiliant mood of those cute little animals. It jumps around so ecstatic that anybdy who sees it will forget their worries at that moment and feel like their own child playing in front of them.I made sure to catch hold of one calf at least and play around with that for 5-10 minutes.I miss them all so much when i see the people holding a burger in the hand and literally running to catch the train.

Yeah, yeah.,i hear you say,"move on dude. You have got whole lot of life to live".Yes.,thats exactly i am doing now.I am just saving the thoughts for the rainy days.

I am able to have pleasant thoughts of my native only because of the great childhood my parents gave us.Thanks to my parents,we brothers were never made to feel the impact of the financial struggles our dad was undergoing.I have fewer words in my limited vocabulary to write them all down here.
I will miss my native,no doubts. But,the native i visualize is no more there. Its all gone 10 years back.Life goes on folks!!

The New Wizkid!

Controlled Aggression.Yes,that's how i will define her. This year Wimbledon witnessed the making of a champion who is going to be there for many more years, and will hopefully rewrite the record books. The kid i am talking about here is none other than the Wimbledon 2004 women's champion Maria Sharapova.

It is just unbelievable for a girl of just 17 years old to show such 'Never-say-die' attitude and tremendous killer instinct. In the finals of the championship,Serena Williams was simply outplayed by the sheer character and determination of Sharapova.Anybody would misjudge and just take this girl for granted seeing her silky blonde hair and the innocent, photogenic beauty. But beware people, there is a lioness inside that beauty.

Sharapova drew everybody's attention when she beat much experienced Ai sugiyama in the quarterfinals.Ai sugiyama is a player who plays by the book, which is a typical Japanese character. It helped her to win the first set comfortably. But in the crunch moments, one needs the fighter instinct and thoughts beyond the book.Thats what Sharapova did when she fought like a tigress to win the second set and went on to crush Ai in the third and decisive set.

For those who thought that it was just a flash in the pan to win on a lucky day,Sharapova proved them all wrong in the semifinals against the former champion and aging Lindsey Davenport. In this match too,Sharapova gifted the first set to Lindsey easily. She seemed to be losing focus even in the second set. Thanks to the rain interruption,Sharapova got some breathing time and when she came back to continue the game, she was totally a different player with a overhauled attitude. She fired from all her barrels to achieve a seemingly impossible victory.

The final was the perfect finish for the well carried performance throughout. After seeing the murderous defeat of Jenifer Capriati in the hands of Serena, everybody would have thought the final was going to be a finishing formality for Serena to get her third consecutive Wimbledon crown. But within the first half an hour of the match,Sharapova fired so early winning the first set so easily, and showed Serena that will power is greater than physical power.Serena could do nothing other than looking at awe and appreciating the opponent at times.Sharapova's powerful shots and big volleying was simply too good for Serena to handle. It was surprising to see such a strokeplay from that slender teenage girl. The second set was a classy exhibition of her brilliance and her presence of mind when she played some timely lofts.Serena was outplayed in every area in the second set.The win was so well deserved and hence her ecstatic moments were so beautiful. Her running into the spectators to give her dad a sweet hug, trying to reach her mom over the cellular phone in the middle of the court and her control even with the mike, everything were so typical of a teenage girl.Nobody, including Sharapova herself, would have expected that she would win against a player who was strong enough to play in Men's section.

The sports magazines have got their new Cover girl.Only difference is,this girl is not going to be just a cover girl. She can cross many milestones if she controls her unforced errors and improves her serves considerably.

One thing is for sure, whenever she plays, whatever may be the outcome of the match,i will stay fixed in front of the TV enjoying the grace of the glorious beauty.Boy,she is like an angel! Posted by Hello

"Its very simple man.means what.Somewhat difficult".On the first day of my college,my basic engineering class started off with the above said 'clear' explanation. While telling this,my lecturer used to draw hundreds of omni directional arrow heads on the blackboard, clearly depicting our frame of minds in the class. Our classroom board had many close friends in the name of lecturers. They were talking to the board most of the time, rarely showing their face to the students.

My first year in college was in a temporarily hired building because of the construction of the main building. The rental building was more like a garment factory than a college. It took quite a long time to learn a completely new language called "chennai tamil".Speaking about learning new languages,a recent research shows that when people learn new languages ,their brains become very sharp.Thats the reason God gave me so many chances to learn new languages. My roommates were telugu guys.I worked in Bangalore, karnataka. And now working in Japan.I am able to understand all these languages but the sharpness factor is still evasive.Sigh..research studies are bound to go wrong sometimes.

I had mixed group of friends. In one of the classroom seminars, one of my friends was so bent on his opinion that Ashok Layland uses Tidal power in its Hosur(which is interestingly 500 km away from the sea)production House.Such an innovative guy was he.There was this other guy,who used to sideline anybody who walks along.Yes,i mean literally. He had such a unique style of walking. But his punchy one liners always used to bring out hearty laughs in the group.and one guy uses the real chennai swearing on the stage in front of nearly 1000 people in the college cultural fest.He went on to sing a mesmerizing song later winning the best singer prize.

We had a place called hostel whose regular visitors during the rainy seasons were snakes of unbelivable lengths. One of the inmates saw a snake once and fled the hostel at that very moment and never came back to that place even for a casual visit.

The taste of the food never changed in my college canteen.Wait,wait.Do not jump into conclusions so soon.Only if there was something called as taste, then only the question arises about the varying of the taste.

In spite of all these kind of jokes,my college gave me an invaluable gift,Friends.I am glad that unlike the usual college friendship that ends with the graduation day,we guys are still in very close touch, thanks to the internet.Even a single worded mail from my college buddy makes my day bright.

Here we go guys, these two parts of the rickshaw are dedicated to all my friends. For those who have accepted me the way i am.

RikshawGraph-1

I belonged to the nerd, naamam(a typical iyengar's mark on the forehead) marked, oily haired, dhoti wearing brahmin boy category for quite a long time.I never did any of those mischieves, in other words, adventures that the adolescent school boys try to do to exhibit their masculinity.

My first experience of the arrow of the cupid happened when i entered into 11th standard, that was when i first had a co-education clssroom.Boy!! everyday i enter into the classroom,my adrenaline used to pump up.I had this experience for quite sometime. But i had this agni pariksha on my self control for two years.Imagine your class filled with lots of butterfly like girls sitting just in your hands reach but the class teacher happens to be your DAD.I used to be very jealous of my friends when they talk about every girl's dress, whom does she smile at etc., during the lessons whereas i used to sit straight like a lagaan'ed horse looking straight to my dad ,in otherwords, my english teacher all the time.

One fine breezy morning,a girl walks into the classroom thinking that she is walking into the class room like any other girl. She had no clues that she just walked into my life and would walk away with the honour of 'My first Crush'.My whole world started revloving around that girl.I felt her aura everywhere i go and my 125 year old school building became the most beautiful spot in the whole ever expanding universe. How i wish i could write down her name here!!

A single word with her used to make me hungerless, sleepless for days together. To add to this agonisingly sweet pain,i happened to watch 'maine pyar kiya' and went completely mad on this girl.Anybody who gives me some info about her, became my confidant.Because of all these,my academics were hitting all time low like the sensex index nosedive when the left parties wanted to take part in the central government.I scored a 40 in the chemistry, which in my parents point of view was worse than a fail.(Later in the college days,40s became my norm, is a pathetic story).Nobody had any idea about the different chemistry going on inside me.

I had a good friend(in indian terms, chaddi dosth) in my classroom, who was my partner in many ways.We were doubles partner in the table tennis team and opening partners in the cricket team.I should say,we were one hell of a team together.I had no idea he would become my partner in the case of this girl too.Thats the ugly smile of destiny on me.He also got crush on this girl too.

This guy was a toughie compared to me.He used to cut his fingers and write "i love you" with the blood so easily ,whereas i was scared to cut even the beetroots for its color.I was hoping that some miracle would occur and this girl would ignore my buddy and give me a green signal. But my first crush ended up in a bitter note when i heard she accepted my friend's proposal.Thats when my heart crashed like the WTC.The only art i could do properly was the heart symbol with her name in it.My sorrows knew no bounds when that drawing too became a caricature.

People,at this point ,i would like to advise you all on my experience. If you are looking for a similar wavelength pal, then let it better be a person of opposite sex.

Of course,my sorrows lasted for a month or two and no sooner i was ready for another episode. This time,it was our family friend's daughter.Even now, when i think about beautiful girls, first one to come to my mind is this girl.Oh!!if Dravid defines his shots, this girl defined beauty in her every movement. She had this rare gifted combination of beauty and brains and to crown those ,she was so down to earth.

I was so foolish that i used to call her Akka(elder sister) inspite her being just a year elder to me.Some day i got this Gyan and went directly to her and told her "listen ,i dont call anybody as akka who are close to my heart. So i will not call you akka anymore .Do you have any problem in that??".While telling this,my whole body was so hot like a furnace. She was so startled with this and said with a blushing,"no,not at all.In fact i was never comfortable when you call me akka".We had spent hours talking.I never had the courage of telling her how i felt about her. When i say she looked very good in some dress, the next day she comes in front of me wearing that dress.
I know ,i know it sounds very silly. But guys, please let me pour out my thoughts here.

I was so upset when there was talk going on that she may become a part of my family in such a relation that i will no more be able to think of her, the way i used to.Fortunately or unfortunately it did not work out and so was my second crush. She was married to someone else and went out of the village. All this happened in front of my helpless eyes.

But i think if i meet these girls again now,i would not take off my spectacles and turn back and cry with my whole body shaking. One reason is ,i dont wear spectacles.hihi.Next is,these are all sweet memories to cherish than to feel sad about anything.

So,folks ..dont go away.Next is the interesting part of college life where my transformation from a nerd into ........ hihihi,a more lousy guy.If you liked this first part,i will write the second one.Or else i will spare you all with this itself.Stay tuned.

Of Pickles and Books

Our beloved cassanova of the 21st century,William Jefferson Clinton has written his memoir,My Life.During the release of the same,he addressed a gathering and said he is a pickle in the history now.The charecteristic of a pickle as we all know is,even a single droplet of water spoils the whole content. But i am not sure what will happen to this pickle if protein mixes up with pickle.I guess that can be found only in the DNA test.
There is a lot of discussion going on regarding this term pickle in the net after his addressing.

Sometime back Hillary released a book regarding all the controversies. And now this gentleman releases 957 pages of the same story again.I assume we can expect a book from Chelsea too very soon.Who knows, probably Clinton's dog may also write its own version.Oh Boy! the same story of Clinton sleeping on the couch for many days, told again and again.I am sure there are many more issues discussed in Bill Clinton's book. But one of the main reasons why this book is eagerly awaited is very conspicuous.

It was really funny to see the americans standing in long queues from the morning to buy this book and get an autograph of him.My dear americans ,if you have so much money that you are ready to buy 3 books to read the same contents, why dont you do some more charity instead??I think Monica has already written a book. Not sure anyway. In any case, the Clintons have made sufficient Dollars even out of this infamous episode. Is this called as Garbage recylcing??Smart business family. They have clearly understood the psychology of people that they always get curious about peeeping into others houses. If it is a celebrity, they would not mind even peeping into the bedrooms.Kahaani ghar ghar ki.

But i always admire Clinton inspite of whatever his personal life be.I feel his administration was miles better than this Bush Jr.At least he knew what he was talking. And needless to say,he is a charismatic and charming personality who is capable of making spell bound speeches effortlessly. One such instance is his addressing of the joint Houses of Indian Parliament during his visit to India.

Talking about the books, our respected president also wrote some gem of books.I dont know how many indians know even the name of those books. For any great things to be done, there should be a starting point .So,mere Bharatvaasiyon, please cultivate the habit of reading, irrespective of fictious or non fictious books, let it be a starting point.Slowly,we will be able to identify and distinguish the quality of the books.

Recently Read jokes!

I am just following kamal haasan's style. One serious venture and to get out of that ,one comedy movie. So,here i am,giving you some interesting jokes which i read recently.
1.A mallu goes to New Delhi as as a mathematics teacher. One day,he gives the students some problems for solving. Here goes the conversation.
Teacher:"Rahul,did u solve the borblems i gave?"
Rahul:"yes sir,but a few."
Teacher:"show me those broblems which u didnt solve".After going through the problem, the teacher exclaims,
"sech a zimbel broblem and you gandu(can't do)?"

2.
This is a conversation between colleagues in an office party. One of them is a mallu.A married colleague comes to the party with his wife. They are married for quite a few years but no child. The wife is playing with a small baby of another lady on her laps. Our mallu friend says to the husband "Look man.Your wife is carrying a baby".annoyed with this ,the friends say "hey ..watch out man ,this gives another meaning too"
Our mallu friend quickly refuses "no,no, she is carrying someone else's baby".

Sambhavaami Yuge Yuge!

What would you say if a school going boy comes to you and proclaim himself as a saint? You are right. All i would do is to give him a series of serious psycho councelling and try to set things alright.Thats just silly me.But there is a gang which found a Golden egg laying duck in that boy.Still amused of what i am talking about?alright.here is some insight of the latest balayogi(oops ..not the late balayogi!) buzz going on in tamilnadu.

A 12 year old boy (bharani dharan)who has a religious brought up, recently proclaimed himself as a saint(bharani dhara raghavendra swamigal...uuff!!).To add flavour to this ridiculous joke ,he now has a significant number of disciples behind him who allegedly are trying to exlpoit this strange situation and making money out of it.The worried parents pleaded the boy to stay with the family but he renounced them stating saints dont have any connections with their so called Poorvasramam(family before the sainthood). The parents worried about the not-so-good company which he now has around him, even did a kidnapping of that boy, turning the proceedings into a state news. The boy is stated to be staying seperately with police security.

Whatsoever funny the situation is,the concerned parties have got more publicity than they would have expected.I was so angry and felt helpless when i saw the news that the High ranking Police Official comes to that urchin and seeks blessings.Oh!!! Please Tamilnadu, try to stand on your feet once atleast .Get up from floor .Enough of blessing seeking. Its time to do some soul seeking.

Whenever people lose self-confidence,there will be this kind of samiyaars in the corner of every street.Seeing the photo of that kid,he looks nothing more than a boy for a school annual disguise competition. And irony is that there are many people surrounding him in the age group of 50-60.Oh,please oldies !!do you think this kid knows more about life than you all? Then what on earth is the use of you people living in this world for so many years???Ever thought of this??

Its good to see that the government officials are behind this kid for using deer skin. The best correction for this boy is, he has to be in jail or in junior correction schools for sometime.Let him know how hard the life is.Then all this mockery will automatically come to an end.
We have embarassment of riches in the case of mutts and saints in India. Its time to have more schools and hospitals. If such mimicks do not come to an end,INDIA CAN NEVER EVER SHINE.
A true God fearing person would never go behind any such earthly creatures. As Bhagavat Gita itself says ,"Karmayoga is the best way to attain the Moksha, the Immortality.Do your duty and leave the rest to Him".May the Almighty help our people in realizing this.
GOD SAVE INDIA!!
I origianlly intended to write this in a lighter note. But it went on to become a serious one without my intentions.

Aayutha Ezhuthu-A commoner's thought

When i was in India last month,i had the chance of watching this movie in one of my favourite theaters in chennai,The Satyam. But,sadly,i had to watch it alone because i was the only guy roaming around like a drifter that time. One of my buddies ditched me at the last moment that he had training to attend.(He was gazing at one of those karchief holding, jasmine filled plaited, career focussed chennai gal during training, is a different story altogether).( No offence machi!!).That was one of the times when i felt the need for a girlfriend.OK..Polambals apart.

Let me come to the point. As i said in the title, its just a commoner's review. All i wanted was a good entertainer(like most other people would want) to kill my time till i board my flight.

As everybody would have watched the movie by now,and lots of GBs have been used up on reviewing it again and again by all and sundry,i would not make it boring by gettting into the narration of the movie.

Many people have compared it to amores perros,a Mexican movie. They had written off the movie stating its a faded copy of the original. As an ordinary movie goer,i do not care abt the nadhimoolam and rishimoolam of the movie as long as it is interesting. So,what i feel about these people is that they just want to show off their flair of the world movies.Tell me honestly, how many of our tamil movie buffs know and care about a mexican movie..???come on folks ,get real.

There are 2 things i liked in this movie.
First one is the Technical aspects of the movie.Ravi.K.chandran has taken up the tamil movie standards to a greater altitude with his skills and love for the job.Every frame is an eye catcher and especially the motion freeze(is that what you call it??) during the action sequences need a special mention here. When i was watching "Behind Enemy Lines", i was really stunned to see the technical standards of that movie esp those with the camera.i was really longing why not our folks get out of the running around the tree sequences and take a movie that would make you sit up.Finally my dream came true when i saw this A.E.Great work ravi.!!and a spl mention to the editor also.Crispy one.

Second worth mentioning is Surya.this kid is too good these days.I have been watching him since his first movie and his recent performances augur him a long and successful run in the industry.I was really impressed with his earlier movie kakha kakha too.His body language and subtle but strong performances are a treat to watch.I am tired of those protagonists who deliver dialogs to the screen, thinking of attacking somebody else.Utterly nonsense. They dont realize they are making a big joke out of themselves. Its soothing to watch a director's hero in surya. His growth curve is well drawn.(I still wonder what kind of a curve will dhanush have in his career graph..)
I know you must be wondering why there is no word about madhavan when all the people
go gaga over his performance. What would i say??i did not like his performance in this, though he was ready to be knocked down by the hero.
Nothing worth mentioning about the glamour gals in the movie. As usual they come and go like pets ,typical style of mani. What disappointed me most was the lack of tight screenplay.its a collateral effect on mani that people would expect a Roja effect whenever they watch his movie. He has to keep that in mind.
Thats the way(aahann aahaan) it goes man. Here i am,stuck up like a director who has no clues on how to finish his movie.I guess i have made enough blabber to publish this post.
Chaos...
Readers be cautioned that Blabbers will continue..Dont go away!!Stay connected.
A spl thanks to those who posted and those who will post comments .This will keep me ticking to pester you all for quite sometime.

Pallavi!

Thats Right guys..!! here i am, starting my blog keerthana and this is the pallavi.i know there will be lots of abhaswarams and sruthi bedhams in this.I am jus a kid in this great blog world. So,hopefully my alapanas get better with time.so,please dont tear me apart for this humble work of mine.
my friends used to suggest me that i write some literary work of my own.Of course those guys were not tamil guys, thats why. Those who knew tamil and my proficiency in tamil, would not have dared to suggest that.Only i know how much of a blundor that will be.Just because i read more tamil stuffs ,that doesnt give me a right to think myself as a guy who can write something. But,there has always been a small desire in my mind that i should try writing something. So,i found this blog spot as a perfect place to script my blabbers. Here we go guys,i have also taken a plunge into the world of blog spot.
I dont want to start with a usual intro abt me telling all stories about myself. So,whenever i find time,i would like to share anything and everything that are interesting.
